Cats! We have a few amongst the bloggers. Most of the time I’ve had dogs - so I’ve not had much opportunity to become acquainted with cats. We always had dogs except when I was very young (many moons ago) when my first cat was rescued from the streets of Renfrew by my grandparents who had been feeding him for a few months. It was Christmas and we were expecting my grandparents for Christmas dinner. They travelled from Renfrew by tramcar to the Renfrew ferry and over the Clyde to Yoker where they caught another tram to Anniesland Cross and eventually boarded a bus which dropped them off an hour later at the top of our road. What a journey - and all the while carrying a cat in a shopping bag! We had him for many years and he enjoyed his country life.
Zulu belonged to Meriel who had just moved up from the south of England. Meriel was busy making curtains for her kitchen and had been measuring and sewing for most of the day. She had temporarily attached the curtains to the rail to check the length and sat down with a cup of coffee for a breather. Along came Zulu, jumped on top of the cooker; the hotplate was on and so, having burnt her paws, leapt into the air and grabbed the curtains. Down came the curtains and down came Zulu landing in the cup of hot coffee.
Just this week in one of our local papers (yes we have 2),I saw a story about a Bengal tabby cat who had gone missing from Bearsden in 2007. Recently, he had been discovered by Cats Potection people on Millport, Isle of Cumbrae and, due to the fact that he was microchipped, he was identified as the lost cat from Bearsden. He has now been returned to his owners in Bearsden who have no idea how he managed to cross the sea to Millport — probably in a pea green boat!!
A family in Largs had just moved into a semi detached house in a quiet part of the town. The other semi was occupied by a family with 2 dogs and a student daughter who was due home for the weekend. She arrived home and asked her mother when she decided to have a cat. Surprised, her mother said that there would be no point of a cat as the dogs would not be too happy - and neither would a cat. The daughter said that she saw a lovely brown cat walking through the lower hall before it disappeared somewhere. Her mother told her not to be silly as the dogs would have been a ware of a cat in the house. The matter was soon forgotten until bedtime. As the daughter made her way upstairs for the night she saw the cat once more strolling past her in an aloof manner on the top landing and once more it was nowhere to be seen. Concerned that she was hallucinating the daughter decided to keep quiet about the whole episode. In the morning, the girl awoke to a low growling sound. When her mother was called to investigate, they discovered a chocolate coloured Burmese cat under the chest of drawers. The cat was old and had impaired vision. It had entered the wrong semi.
That’s enough of cats, I think, except to mention our dear old Tabby who adopted us a couple of months ago. She is quite vocal and we have many conversations. She moved out of her previous home when a younger model was brought into the house. She tied her red spotted handkerchief to a stick and set off to find her fortune and we are very fortunate to have her! We are now categorized as cat lovers.
I lost a bit of this posting as I haven’t learned to use the blogging bit correctly I had problems saving it. Anyway it’s a start. Hope my next effort will be better!
